The Fergus Falls Hurricanes won their home opener on Sunday, beating the Hawley Hawks by the score of 6-3.  The Canes broke a 3-3 tie with a 3-run eighth inning to take the lead.  Fergus Falls pitchers struck out 16 Hawley batters in the game with Darin Stanislawski fanning 12 over the last 4 2/3 innings to get the victory.

Fergus Falls got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Stanislawski and Thomas Bosek were both hit by pitches to start the inning.  Austin Stanislawski then walked to fill the bases with no outs.  An Arik Heacox ground out scored pinch-runner Ethan Gronwold, but the Canes couldn’t push across any more runs in the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Hawley scored three runs to gain a 3-1 lead.  An error allowed the lead-off batter to reach bases.  After a strikeout, 4 walks and a hit batter led to 3 runs.  Darin Stanislawski came on in relief with the bases loaded and struck out two batters to get out of the jam.

The Canes responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Sean McGuire singled to lead off the inning and after a force out, Alex Hexum was hit by a pitch and a Darin Stanislawski single loaded the bases.  After a force out at home, RBI walks by Austin Stanislawski and Arik Heacox tied the game 3-3.

McGuire singled with one out in the eighth and came around to score on a triple by Carter Thielke.  Thielke then raced home on a passed ball.  Hexum followed with a single and scored on a double by Darin Stanislawski.

The Canes were led by McGuire (4-5, 3B, R), Thielke (1-5, 3B, R, 4IP, 4K, 1BB, 0R) and Darin Stanislawski (3-4, 2B, RBI).  Mason Klevgaard (2-4, 3B) led the Hawks at the plate.

Next game for the Canes is Sunday, May 28 at 12:00 noon at Matson Field in Moorhead where they will face the Dilworth Raildogs.
