The Perham Activities Department is proud to announce that Jesse Hein has been named the new Perham Yellowjacket Football head coach, pending approval of the Independent School District 549 School Board. Hein was selected out of a field of nine quality candidates and Perham Activities Director Erin Anderson said Hein will be a great resource for the football program.

“I am personally excited to get the opportunity to work with Coach Hein in his new role as Head Coach. The Yellowjacket Football Program will be in good hands with him at the helm and I am also excited for Jesse to bring his vision, passion, purpose, and care for students to this program in the head role,” Perham Activities Director Erin Anderson said. “His current tenure with Yellowjacket Football as an assistant, and his overall football experience in general, will be a great resource for the program.”

After a storied playing career with the Yellowjackets and Bemidji State University, Hein got his coaching start with the Yellowjackets in 2017 as a volunteer coach. He became the full-time Offensive Line Coach in 2018 and held that spot until being named the head coach on May 19. “It feels great. It has been a whirlwind the last couple of months with things up in the air for a little bit, but I am excited to get to work,” Hein said. “I’m excited to give back to the district that did so much for me.”

During his playing career with the Yellowjackets, Hein was a member of three Heart of the Lakes Conference Championship winning teams and three Section 8AAA Championship winning teams. Hein anchored an offensive line that helped lead the Yellowjackets to the Class AAA Semifinals in 2007. He was a five-year letterwinner and was named a two-time Associated Press All-State Offensive Lineman in 2010 and 2011.

He went on to anchor the Bemidji State University offensive line from 2012 to 2016. He was a four-year starter for the Beavers and was the first three-year captain in BSU football history, receiving several accolades in helping the record setting BSU offense.

“I had a wonderful experience here and then went to Bemidji State for five years to play football and I would not trade experience for the world. I met a lot of great people,” Hein said. “My goal was to get back here to teach and coach. I have been an assistant here for six years, have coached with some awesome people and learned a lot from the past leaders here. I look forward to taking a little snippet from each of them and making it my own.”

Hein said fans can expect to see a team that will work hard on the field. “We will be prepared, we are going to come out, play fast and physical,” Hein said. “We are going to keep that tradition of Perham football going.”

Hein said the goal of the program is to make the players good people away from the game and make them good student-athletes that will be successful in the world. The on the field goal for the program remains the same, which is a section championship. The Yellowjackets last won the Section 8AAA Championship in 2019. Hein said it is super unique to have this opportunity to come back and coach at his alma-mater. It is something he has dreampt about since he was in the youth football program.

“It’s something that I have always wanted since I was playing here,” Hein said. “Looking back at some old assignments, I would write down that I wanted to be a head football coach in Perham. Today, it is reality.”
