The Fergus Falls Hurricanes opened the Amateur Baseball season on Sunday with a 12-1 win over Pelican Rapids at Chauncey Martin Field.  Otter pitchers held the Lakers to just one hit in the game.  Darin Stanislawski (3IP, 7K, 1H, 1R, 0ER) was the winning pitcher.  Alex Hexum and Thomas Bosek finished up in relief.

Fergus Falls blew the game open in the top of the first, scoring 8 runs.  Sean McGuire, Alex Hensch and Carter Thielke all hit singles to load the bases with no outs.  An error, walk and sacrifice fly scored 3 runs.  A walk reloaded the bases with 2 outs and an error on a fly ball cleared the bases.  Sean McGuire’s second hit of the inning, a double, scored the 7th run, and Alex Hensch’s second single of the inning brought home the eighth run.

The Canes scored a run in the second on a walk, a fielder’s choice and two wild pitches.  Pelican Rapids got their only run of the game in the second when Dana Johnson reached second base on an error, took third on an errant pick-off throw and scored on a delayed steal of home.

Fergus Falls scored in the third on a Hensch single, a stolen base and a two-out RBI single by Hexum.

In the sixth, Bosek drew a lead-off walk, pinch-runner Dave Johnson took second base on a wild pitch and advanced to third on an Austin Stanislawsi single.  Johnson then scored on a sacrifice fly by McGuire.  The final run for the Cane’s came in the seventh.  Thielke walked to lead things off, went to third on a Darin Stanislawski single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hexum.

Hitting leaders were McGuire (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, 2R), Hensch (3-5, RBI, 2R), Darin Stanislawski (2-3, RBI, R) and Hexum (1-3, 3RBI, R).

Fergus Falls pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and did not issue a walk.  “The pitchers looked in mid-season form, even though this was their first time on a mound since last summer,” commented Head Coach Dave Johnson.

The Canes will have their home opener on Sunday, May 21 against the Hawley Hawks at 1:30pm at American Legion Field.
