The West Central Area softball team swept a double header from Montevideo on Thursday, winning the first game, 12-0, and taking game two, 4-2.  Lily Mahoney and Claire Stark combined on a three-hit shutout in game one and the lady Knights overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a 4-run fourth inning in the nightcap.

“The girls’ didn’t let a little rain stop them in game one as they came off the bus with bats that were hot and ready to play,” commented WCA Head Coach Vanessa McNamara.  “Lily and Claire did an amazing job getting the ball over the plate, hitting the corners and switching up speeds.  For a freshman, Lily’s ability to throw multiple pitches and her consistency is something we as coaches are so proud of.  Addison Staples did a great job behind the plate, throwing out multiple people on the bases.  Alaina Sykora also had some really nice pick-offs when she was catching.  Everyone on the team got at least a single and crossed the plate to score a run.”

WCA gave up only two hits in their game two victory.  “Nora Anderson did an excellent job pitching and Alaina kept people from moving on the bases.  Our defense was doing a great job in the rain, always backing each other up and planning for the miss or poor throw.  Our fans were awesome!  They sat out in the cold and rain and cheered us on, and did it with a smile on their faces.  We truly are blessed with the best group of parents and families which makes our coaching job easier,” added McNamara.

The lady Knights will play seven games in a six day stretch, with prom scheduled during that time as well.  “These kids don’t give up and they have faith in each other and fun in the process,” noted Coach McNamara.  “They are exhausted and they will be exhausted over the next six days, but they won’t give up!”
