Pelican Rapids scored 14 runs in the first inning and went on to post a 19-8 softball victory over Ashby on Monday, “Ashby pitchers had some control issues that led to us scoring 14 runs in the first inning,” reported Pelican Rapids Head Coach Derrick Nelson.  “The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Zayla Arrow.”

Arrow finished 2-for-3 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.  Other hitting leaders were Claudia Gurath (1-3, 3R, 2BB, 2RBI), Sylvia Pesch (3-3, 2BB, 4R), Zayli Arrow (2-2, 2R, BB), Ava Simpson (2-2, 3R, 2BB), Kia Nelson (1-2, 3R, BB, HBP) and Linea Thomas (2-4).

Zayla Arrow (3IP, 4H, 2K, 10BB) was the winning pitcher and Kia Nelson (2IP, 1H, 2K) finished up in relief.

“Zayla lost her control in the third inning, leading to Ashby scoring six runs,” noted Coach Nelson.  “Kia pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth inning to seal the victory.  Chelsey Blakeway, Miren Thomas, Bryn Welch and Malia Tweeton all got their first varsity at bats today.  It was a great experience for our younger girls to get on the varsity field and help contribute to the victory.”

Pelican Rapids will travel to Frazee on Thursday for a HOL double header.
