The West Central Area Knights baseball team opened up the season with a double header against Brandon-Evansville on Thursday in Plainview.  “It was sunny and 82 degrees,” stated WCA Head Coach Mike Anderson.  “Southeast Minnesota doesn’t have any snow left and also is pretty dry.  It was great for all the kids to get out and play baseball in ‘baseball like’ weather!”

The Knights and Chargers split the two games with WCA taking game one, 11-8, and B-E winning the second game, 13-3.

Hitting leaders for B-E were Riley Perleberg (2-3, 2R, BB), Brady Perleberg (2-4, R, SB) and Carter White (1-4, 2R, BB, SB).

“It was great to finally get to play baseball today after a long, indoor season, and the kids were very pumped to play,” said Chargers Head Coach Brian Perleberg.  “We were able to put pressure on offensively, as we had baserunners on in all seven innings, but could never break it open.  We ran the bases well, but struggled to get a big hit when we needed it most.  Brady Perleberg had a solid start on the mound with 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but give credit to WCA as they did a great job of taking advantage of the extra opportunities we gave them.  With several younger players seeing their first varsity action, there were some nerves to work through, but I was pleased with how they handled themselves and kept their composure on the field.”

Riley Perleberg was the winning pitcher in the second game.  The Chargers were led at the plate by Lucas Fuller (4-4, 2B, 2R), Kian Gackle (2-4, 2B), Brady Perleberg (1-1, 3R, 2SB, 2BB), Carter White (3R, 2SB) and Dezmond White (1-1, 3Sac, 5RBI).

“I’m proud of how the team bounced back in the second game to earn the split,” noted Coach Perleberg.  “We received a great offensive performance from Lucas Fuller and strong supporting roles from Kian Gackle, Dezmond White and Brady Perleberg.  Defensively, we played error free ball to help keep WCA from mounting any big innings, and both Riley Perleberg and Landon Sullivan had great composure on the mound.”
