The 2022 track and field season ended on a high note for the Hancock Owls.  The girls’ took third in the Little Eight Conference Meet and the boys’ were sixth in their conference event.  Both 4x800 meter relay teams earned conference championships and Sean Wilson and Jared Koehl went 1-2 in the boys’ 800 meter run.  In all, the Owls had nine athletes compete at the Section 3A meet in 6 events, which is the most section entries they have had in a while.

Returning letter winners for the girls’ are seniors Brandi Messner (sprints), junior Eva Schaefer (sprints), sophomore Alexis Wilson (sprints) and freshmen Kaylynn Christianson (mid distance), Karina Koehl (sprints/hurdles/triple jump), Abby Nuest (mid distance/discus), Vivian Messner (mid distance) and Tabitha Bjerketvedt (distance).  Sophomore Kaylee Wink (distance) will also be in the varsity mix.

The boys return seniors Sean Wilson (mid distance), Jared Koehl (mid distance) and Blake Koehl (hurdles), sophomore Jeremiah Schmidgall (jumps), and freshmen Jace Meierding (sprints/hurdles/jumps), Preston Kisgen (sprints/hurdles/jumps) and Luca Felix (distance/jumps).  Key newcomers for the boys’ are senior Jackson Koehl (sprints/jumps), junior Brayden Kisgen (jumps), sophomore Levi Kellenberger (throws) and freshman Nathan Kellenberger (sprints/jumps).

“I could not ask for a better group of kids,” commented Head Coach Kalee Nuest, now in her fourth season.  “They all have great attitudes, cheer each other on, and really make the team feel like a family.  I’ve seen more of them put in time in the off season, and I am very excited to see how that shows up in their times and distances.  We are a small team, but growing!  We are young, but well-rounded.  I think we will have a good showing in mid distance for both boys and girls, and I’ve got some sprinters I’m really excited to watch this season, too.”

Jacob Brooks (Varsity Assistant), Aria Evink (Junior High) and Landon Wagner (Junior High) will assist Coach Nuest.

“Border West will be tough for both boys and girls in the Little Eight,” noted Nuest.  “Ashby/B-E girls and Ortonville boys will be strong, too.  I am still getting to know our section, but there are some solid schools!  We saw Montevideo and Morris at subs and sections last year, as well as regular season meets.  They always have a strong showing.”
