The Fergus Falls boys’ golf team took second place to Roseau in Section 8AA last spring, just missing out on qualifying for the Class AA State Tournament as a team.  They did have two individuals, Riley McGovern and Ryan Nelson, participate in the state meet as sophomores, gaining some valuable experience which will only help as they enter the 2023 season.

“Riley and Ryan also earned all-conference honors in the difficult Central Lakes Conference where the Otters are the only AA team, competing against all AAA teams,” noted Head Coach Matt McGovern, now in his sixth season.  “Charlie Fuder was all-conference honorable mention as well, for his good play during the season.”

McGovern, Nelson and Fuder lead a strong group of returning letter winners which includes Gavin Geopferd, Adam Kennedy and Aidan Swenson.  Sophomore Colton Drouilliard and freshman Quintin Kuehl will be trying to crack the varsity lineup.

“Otter boys’ golf has produced some great teams in the past,” added Coach McGovern.  “This team should be one of the better teams in school history.  We return our entire lineup from last year where we were just a few shots away from qualifying for the state tournament as a team.  We have lots of young men with great experience, not only playing high school golf, but also competing in amateur tournaments in the summer.  Our goal is to win the Section 8AA tournament and compete for a state title.  We have the talent to do that this year.”

McGovern point to Roseau as once again being the team to beat in the Section, with Alexandria being the top team in the Central Lakes Conference.
