The M State baseball team played a pair of games against Minnesota North-Vermilion on Saturday, winning the opener of their double header by the score of 9-6, and losing the nightcap, 7-3.  The Spartans are now 5-5 on the season.

“I thought we played really well today in the first game, showing a lot of guts to come back and walk it off in the 7th,” commented Spartan Head Coach Grant Harding.  “Brett threw really well again and always gives us a chance to win.  Jackson Martin came through in a big spot and showed his power today as well.  The second game, we just need to be better in certain situations at the plate. But we did some good things today.”

In the first game, Jackson Martin went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, 5 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.  Logan Pulju was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Mike Short (2-3, 2RBI, 2R, BB) and Luke Rutter (1-2, 2BB, 2R) also contributed at the plate.  Brett Engelmeyer (6IP, 4H, 5R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher and Aidan O’Brien pitched an inning of hitless relief.

In the second game, Minnesota North-Vermilion got to O’Brien for five runs in the third inning.  Beau Fetting (2-4, RBI, R), Mike Short (3-4) and Luke Rutter (2-3, R, BB) were the offensive leaders for the Spartans.  Short, Eoghan Fisher and Ben Monson each had a double in the game, while Fetting and Martin added a triple apiece.

Hitting leaders for Vermilion were Marcus Haire Jr. (2-3, 2B, RBI, 2R), Michael Feralio (2-4, R), Chase Snyder (1-3, 3B, 3RBI) and Charlie Wonser (2-3, 2B).
