Junior goalie Lexi Metcalf gave up an early goal in the first period of the Fergus Falls girls’ hockey game against Albert Lea on Thursday afternoon at the Tria Rink in St. Paul, but after that, Metcalf settled down after that, stopping every other shot she faced as the Otters advanced to the Consolation Championship game of the Class A State Girls Hockey Tournament with a 4-1 win over the Tigers.

Mika Cichosz, who played youth hockey in Fergus Falls with a number of the Otter skaters before her family moved to Albert Lea, gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 2:53 into the game with an assist from Aryah Hansen.  It didn’t take long for the Otters to pull even as Hannah Johnson buried the puck at 4:12 to tie the game at 1-1.  Maggie Greenagel assisted on the game tying goal.

A couple of special teams tallies in the second period gave the Otters some breathing room as senior Maddie Hulter scored a power play goal from Hannah Johnson at 9:01 and added a shorthanded goal from Averie Tonneson at 12:18.  Rylynn Krein’s backhander at 16:02 completed the scoring and gave the Otters a 3-goal cushion heading into the third period.  Mckenzie Sjolie earned an assist on Krein’s score.

Fergus Falls finished with 27 shots on goal and Metcalf turned aside 18 of the 19 Albert Lea shots.

Fergus Falls will now face Mankato East at 8:00am Saturday at the Tria Rink in the Consolation Championship Game of the Class A State Girls Hockey Tournament.
