12U B Girls take Third Place in Detroit Lakes Tournament

The 31-3 Otters played four games this past weekend in Detroit Lakes, placing third in a twelve team tournament.

. Friday night the Otters went head-to-head against Albert Lea for game one of the tournament. After a scoreless first period, the Otters stepped up and put a 5 spot on the scoreboard in the second. Kynzie Zender scored the first goal for the Otters unassisted.  Brinly Shol doubled the lead at 2-0 with help from Brinley Harris. Harris was involved in four consecutive goals in one capacity or another. After her assist, Harris scored back-to-back goals of her own with assists coming from Seylah Arenson and Shol. Harris and Claire Duffy finished the second period by assisting Shol on her second goal of the game. Leading 5-1 entering the final fifteen minutes, Shol scored unassisted to put the Otters up by five goals. Ella Lee padded the lead with another goal, as she was assisted by Breeynn Hill and Calista Fleischauer. Shol put across her fourth goal of the game and finished the scoring for the Otters as they went on to win the game by a final score of 8-2.

On Saturday the Otters faced off against Northern Lakes. Both teams are familiar with each other as this is the third meeting between these two teams this season. Shol scored the lone goal for the Otters in the first period giving them a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Zender scored twice within the first three minutes of the second period extending the Otters lead to 3. Hill passed the puck to Lee who shot one past the goalie to increase the lead to four. Shol finished the period with two more goals, one unassisted and the other assisted by Duffy. The Otters now led 6-0 after two periods of play. Duffy and Shol teamed up again to start period three as Shol made it 7-0. Shol then assisted Zender who scored two consecutive goals to make it a 9 goal lead. The Otters finished game two of the tournament by beating Northern Lakes 11-0. Shol scored the last two goals unassisted; and had 10 goals total in the two games thus far.  Goalie Jordynn Anderson saw 39 shots and earned herself a shutout.

Saturday night’s game featured the top two teams in the state of Minnesota battling it out. Number two ranked, Fergus Falls (now 31-3) went against the number one team, Marshall (now 28-1). The game definitely lived up to the hype. Zender put the Otters on the board first with just 1:23 to go in the period. However, one minute later, Marshall answered with the equalizer and tied things up at 1-1 after period number one. Just twelve seconds after the faceoff, to start period two, Zender got the lead back for the Otters and they now led 2-1. Zender was assisted by Shol. Once again, Marshall responded with one of their own to tie it up at 2-2. Marshall would add one more goal before the end of the period, giving them their first lead of the game. Period  three was all Marshall, they put up three more goals and finished with a 6-2 victory over the Otters. It was only the eleventh time in the twenty nine games Marshall has played where they gave up two goals or more.

Sunday’s action took place against New Ulm/Sleepy Eye for the third place game. The Otters came out aggressively and put three across in the first period. Zender scored first, assisted by Hill. Hill followed that up with an unassisted goal of her own. The third goal of the period was scored by Duffy, assisted by Harris. The Otters carried a 3-1 lead into the second period. Duffy, Harris and Shol all scored in the second  to double their total goals scored in the game. Assists were by; Arneson, Payton Wolden, and Harris. Taking a 6-1 lead into the final period, the Otters scored one more from Shol, assisted by Harris. The 12U B girls finished the tournament with a 7-1 win over New Ulm/Sleepy Eye and took home third place!
