The Perham girls’ basketball team took to the road on Friday night to face Pequot Lakes.  The Yellowjackets held a slim 29-28 edge at halftime, but the Patriots built a double digit lead in the second half and went on to post a 63-52 win.

“Good game last night, it was a battle of a couple of really good teams,” said Perham girls’ basketball coach TJ Super. “Pequot plays a very aggressive, trapping style of defense and they like to run the court on offense. We really played well out of the gate and built up a 24-14 lead. Pequot was able to knock down some big shots at that point, though, and cut the lead to 29-28 at the half. Pequot jumped out right away to a 2nd half lead as we came out and lacked energy. Down by as much as 10 we started playing really hard and made some nice plays to cut into the lead. A deep Mya Morris 3 that she got fouled on cut the lead to 4 but it seemed like the breaks went to Pequot and they were able to pull out the win. Overall, it was a good game for us to learn some things about ourselves and should make us more prepared for playoffs.”

Perham shot the ball well, making 49% of their shots from the floor.  Pequot Lakes hit 39% of their field goal attempts and outscored the Yellowjackets 16-4 from the free throw line as they shot 29 free throws to just 7 for Perham.

Leaders for Perham were Willow Thiel (21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists), Morris (9 points) and Kaia Anderson (5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists).  Cora Grismer had 5 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

Kelsi Martini led Pequot Lakes with 23 points at 6 rebounds.  Maci Martini finished with 20 points and 5 steals, and Isabel Larson had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals.  Ella Kratochvil secured a team high 11 rebounds and led the Patriots with 7 assists.

Perham (18-2, 9-0 HOL) had their eleven game winning streak snapped with the loss.  The Yellowjackets will play two Heart O’ Lakes Conference road games this week, at DGF on Monday and at Breckenridge on Friday.
