The Border West Buccaneers paid a visit to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Friday night and established that they are the front runners in the Little Eight Conference.  The Bucs handed the Comets an 81-50 loss in Fergus Falls.  “Border West is legit, if that wasn’t already apparent,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “They were physical, dictating, constant.  They play so well together and off of each other.  Coach Jordon Roos is doing a great job with his guys and they should be very proud of their execution tonight.”

Noah Brumfield and Justin Petersen led the Comets with 23 and 14 points, respectively.

“Early on, we were able to match them shot for shot, but that’s not the type of game that is going to beat a team like Border West,” noted Coach Garvin. “We had a stretch midway through the first half where we turned the ball over five times in a row and they were able to extend to a double digit lead.  Those moments were huge for us.  We lost our composure and buried ourselves deeper with another set of bad shots and turnovers which build our deficit to 49-25 at the half.”

Clint Determan scored 24 of his 26 points in the half and the Bucs hit 20-of-33 from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

After a high scoring affair to start with teams trading baskets back and forth until it was 17-17, we changed the pace and went zone and found success with it,” said Coach Roos. “We then went on a run in the second part of the first half to open it to 49-25. We held our own in the rebounding battle and significantly won the turnover battle. The team was hot shooting all night and fueled a great atmosphere from our bench and fans.”

“I’ll be curious to see our rebounding stats after we breakdown the film, but the Bucs really did a great job on the glass,” said Coach Garvin.  “We were slow to react to shot attempts and didn’t use our body well to clear space and simply didn’t win many of the 50/50 situations that we’re going to need to win to be a good team.”

Hillcrest (13-3, 9-2 LEC) will travel to Barrett to face West Central Area on Monday night and will go to Breckenridge on Tuesday.

Border West (14-2, 9-0 LEC) will play at Ashby on Tuesday and will host Battle Lake on Friday.
