Otter Boys Blank Willmar for Second Straight Night

Fergus Falls completed back-to-back shutouts of the Willmar boys’ hockey team on back-to-back nights, following up their 5-0 win in Willmar on Monday night with an 8-0 dominance of the Cardinals in Fergus Falls on Tuesday night.  The Otters had 39 shots on goal and Willmar managed just 14 as senior goalie Ben Swanson notched his 50th career win in net.

Shane Zierden scored the first two goals of the game and added a playmaker (3 assists) for a 5-point night for the Otters.  His first period goal was assisted by Joey Johnson and Kellen Stenstrom.

Zierden’s power play goal to start the second period was assisted by Leighton Buckmeier and Colin Becker.  At 4:31 of the period, Jax Katzenmeyer scored from Michael Schmidt and Gavin Goepferd.  Stenstrom scored from Zierden and Brayden Nelson at 5:05 and Stenstrom and Zkierden assisted on Leighton Buckmeier’s power play goal at 9:27.  Griffin Babolian increased the lead to 6-0 with a goal setup by Becker and Jack Welde.

In the third period Welde scored from Katzenmeyer and Johnson at 6:35 and Nelson scored from Stenstrom and Zierden at 9:20.

Fergus Falls (12-7) will host Wadena-Deer Creek on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
