The Battle Lake girls’ basketball team earned their first victory of the season on Thursday night when they edged Bertha-Hewitt, 51-50 on a last second shot by Morgan Malone.

“We started off slow offensively, but played a solid defensive game throughout the first half,” stated Head Coach David Marso of Battle Lake.  “Midway through the first period we had a nice run behind three 3-pointers from Kenady Cameron and we had a 28-18 halftime lead.  Throughout the second half we held the lead, but the bears slowly cut into that lead and with 8 seconds left in the game they grabbed a one point lead.  Sophie Akerman pushed the ball down the court and passed it ahead to Morgan who hit the buzzer beater to win it!”

Kenady Cameron led Battle Lake with 19 points and Malone added 17.  Bertha-Hewitt was led by Carissa Winscher with 18 points.

Battle Lake will play again on Friday, hosting the Rothsay Tigers.

Bertha-Hewitt (5-8) will play at Pillager on Friday night.
