Pelican Rapids led 33-28 at halftime and outscored Breckenridge 37-29 over the final 18 minutes to post a 70-57 Heart O’ Lakes Conference boys’ basketball victory over the Cowboys.

“It was encouraging to see the balanced scoring that we got tonight as Breckenridge did a nice job of limiting Ian Fahje on the offensive end,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud. “We had multiple guys step up with confidence and carry the scoring load that he normally gives us. We were also better coming out of halftime tonight which helped us build a double digit lead that we were able to sustain for most of the second half.”

Hunter Williams and Charlie Larson led the Vikings with 19 and 18 points, respectively.  Brady Petznick and Treyvon Benson were also in double digits with 12 and 11 points.

Alex Sanchez led the Cowboys with a game high 23 points and Daymon Smith added 14 points and 5 rebounds.  Cam Nieto contributed 8 points, Landon Blaufuss finished with 6 points and 4 boards, and Jacob Kunkel had 5 points and 3 rebounds.

“The Cowboys battled the entire night,” stated Breckenridge Head Coach Jordan Christensen.  “Alex Sanchez and Daymon Smith did a much better job of getting downhill throughout the game.  Cam Nieto absolutely shut down Logan Fahje, the Vikings best player.  Landon Blaufuss was unfortunately in foul trouble all night.  The last four minutes of the first half and first four minutes of the second half killed us.  Other than that, we played well.”

Breckenridge (2-8, 1-4 HOL) will play the Wahpeton Huskies on Saturday at 6:30pm at NDSCS.

Pelican Rapids (9-5, 3-3 HOL) will play at Frazee next Thursday.
