The M State Men's Basketball team got off to a great start on Wednesday night against St. Cloud, building a 40-22 halftime lead. The led 50-30 in the second half before the Cyclones starting making their move with a ten point run that cut the lead to 50-40. They pulled to within four points late in the game, however, M State was able to push the lead back up to double digits, securing an 83-69 win.
Trailing 15-11 in the first half, the Spartan men put together a 9-point run and a 12-point run to increase their lead to 32-17. M State shot the ball well, making 48% (35-73) of their shots from the floor. They only shot two free throws, making both of them.
Yonis Mohamud was the high point man for M State with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, He also had a team high 3 steals. Foday Sheriff registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Gooselaw made 7-of-11 shots on the way to a 14 point night and Akok Aguer had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
St. Cloud was 19-for-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line. They hit only 1-of-9 3's in the first half, but improved to 7-of-17 in the second half, making them 8-26 (31%) for the game. Their overall field goal percentage was 37.5% (21-56).
The Cyclones were led by Khalid Ibn with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Elijah Mead contributed 15, hitting 4-of-7 3's, and isaiah Foster finished with 11 points. Ty'Shawn Bryant added 13 rebounds.
M State improved to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the MCAC South. They will play at Rochester on Saturday afternoon.
