The Alexandria Boys Varsity Hockey team headed to Sartell-St. Stephen to take on the Sabres in a Central Lakes Conference matchup on Friday with the two teams battling to a 2-2 overtime tie.

After a back and forth scoreless first period, Senior Nick Peterson scored is team leading 10th goal of the season. Junior Leo Kompelien won the offensive zone faceoff back to Junior defenseman Gage Castle who put the puck on net and Peterson banged in the rebound.  Despite only scoring once in the second period, it was all Cardinals as they outshot the Sabres 14-2.

Sartell would bounce back in the third scoring two back to back goals, the 2nd on the power play to give them a 1 goal lead. With just 1:30 left in the contest and Alexandria’s goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Junior defenseman Gage Castle scored his first career varsity goal to tie the game at 2 apiece. Senior captain Tyler Kludt and Junior assistant captain Jack Lamski assisted on the goal.

The two teams headed into overtime where Alexandria, although having to kill off a 2 minute penalty, had many grade A scoring chances but were unable to get anything past the Sabres goaltender. The game ended in a 2-2 tie after 8 minutes of overtime.

Junior goaltender Jackson Cavers made 23 of 25 saves in net for the Cardinals who outshot the Sabres 32 – 25. The overall game was nothing less than exciting as it presented high speed and back and forth play.
