Prior to the semifinals we were in 4th place and had a great round pushing all 7 semifinalists into the finals with pins which jumped us up into first place at the end of that round. However, we couldn't hang onto the lead in the final round.
Nolan Fettig at 106 wrestled in arguably the deepest weight class in terms of competitors, but he dominated the tournament pinning all 3 of his competitors needing only 56 seconds to pin his opponent in the finals. Nolan was voted the outstanding wrestler of the tournament for his performance. Blaze Nelson at 138 pinned his opponent in just 30 seconds in the semi-finals then notched a 12-6 decision in the finals for his tournament title. Kelly Johnson wrestled the best he has all season taking home the title at 170lbs. He recorded two pins and a dominant 10-0 shutout in his finals match. Drayson Elfering at 113, Mason McGrane at 120, Landon Seward at 182, and Cody Vatnsdal at 195 all came in 2nd place with excellent wrestling and pretty solid performances.
We were able to place 14 wrestlers in the top 6 and put together a very good tournament as a team. The Cards are back in action Tuesday in Perham for a triangular with Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus, on the road again Thursday for a triangular in Mahnomen with Barnesville, then Saturday we head to St. Croix Lutheran for a dual tournament.
