Pelican Rapids led 40-25 at halftime Tuesday night and went on to record a 66-52 victory over Barnesville in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference boys’ basketball contest.  “It was a nice effort by our guys tonight to snap the three game losing streak we were on,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud.

Charlie Larson led the Vikings with 20 points.  Ian Fahje added 16 and Luke Sjolie contributed 10 points.  Pelican Rapids made 60% (25-41) of their shots from the field and 63% (12-19) of their 3’s.

“We came out and shot the ball well in the first half, which gave us some confidence on the offensive end as the ball seemed to move better tonight,” noted Coach Gullingsrud.  “Defensively, we stayed pretty solid against a fast paced Barnesville offense, so overall we felt good about how our kids played.”

Leaders for Barnesville were Carson Hagen with 13, Wyatt Suter with 11 points and 6 rebounds, and Tate Inniger with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.  Gannon Bolgrean finished with 5 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Barnesville shot 39% (19-48) from the field and 38% (8-21) on 3-pointers.

“We didn't play well, but we have to give the Vikings credit,” said Barnesville Head Coach Matt Askegaard. “They hit a bunch of shots tonight. Whether we had good closeouts and rotations or not, they flat out hit shots. There's really not much else to say defensively. It seemed each time we were about to go on a run, they would hit a 3 or find an opening for an easy bucket. When you're not getting stops on the defensive end you will tend to 'press' that much harder on the offensive end.  Offensively, we missed some easy buckets, but the last game and a half we have made it very difficult on ourselves; most of it being self-inflicted. We have a lot of really good basketball players, and young men for that matter, in our locker room. I have no doubt we will come to practice tomorrow and get better.”

Barnesville is now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. They travel to Glenwood to face Minnewaska Area Thursday and host DGF on Saturday.

Pelican Rapids will host Breckenridge on Thursday night.
