Otter Boys Defeat Red Lake Falls for Eighth Win in Last Nine Games

The Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team scored three second period goals to take a 4-2 lead over Red Lake Falls on Friday night and then held on for a 4-3 win.  Fergus Falls had 35 shots on goal and senior goalie Ben Swanson stopped 19 of the 22 shots he faced.

Evan Girdler got Red Lake Falls on the board at the 2:38 mark of the first period with assists going to Blake Breland and Gavin Girdler.  Fergus Falls tied the game at 9:52 when Kellen Stenstrom scored from Brayden Nelson.

At 9:58 of the second period Fergus Falls took the lead on a goal by Leighton Buckmeier, assisted by Stenstrom.  Nelson added an unassisted goal at 12:11 for a 3-1 Otter lead.  Red Lake Falls made it 3-2 when Breland scored from Evan and Gavin Girdler.  Fergus Falls got their two goal lead back with 29 seconds left in the period on Nelson’s second goal of the night, assisted by Stenstrom.

In the third period Red Lake Falls notched a power play goal at 14:34 trimming the Otters lead to 4-3.  Gavin Girdler scored the goal with assists from Evan Girdler and Brock Seeger.

Fergus Falls (9-3) has won 8 of their last 9 games.  They will host Sartell on Thursday and travel to Alexandria on Friday for a pair of Central Lakes Conference matchups.
