Maddie Brimhall’s game winning goal carried the Fergus Falls girls’ hockey team to their second consecutive Holiday Tournament championship at the New Hope Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Brimhall’s goal, assisted by Averie Tonneson and Rachel DeBrito gave the Otters a 4-3 win over Bloomington Jefferson.

The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Allison Wolf early in the first period.  Kaysawn Carlson and Jana Lesch assisted on the goal.  Tonneson scored a power play goal at 7:55 of the opening period, with assists from Maggie Greenagel and DeBrito, tying the game at 1-1.

Jefferson took a 2-1 lead 1:04 into the second period on a goal from Valerie Panvica, assisted by Carlson.  Hannah Johnson tied the game at 6:17 from Tyra Skjeret and Maddie Hulter, but an unassisted power play goal by Janna Lesch put the Jaguars on top, 3-2 after two periods of play.

Skjeret scored the equalizer at 11:28 of the third period on a rebound shot off a drive by Skye Norgren, setting the state for Brimhall’s heroics.

Ana Jyrkas finished with 16 saves in the contest.  The Otters only allowed 1 shot in the third period.  Fergus Falls had 34 shots on goal with 15 of them coming in the third.

“We were bad in the first two periods, leaning on all the soft excuses in the book,” stated Head Coach Tim Lill of the Otters.  “Captain’s leadership took over in the third.  Got it done and I’m very proud of the way we finished.  Deserved to be Tournament champs.”

Freshman Hannah Johnson, eighth-grader Maggie Greenagel and senior Maddie Hulter were named to the All-Tournament team.

Fergus Falls (12-4) will play at River Lakes on Thursday and will host Thief River Falls on Friday.
