Emily Dehler came off the bench to register a double-double (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Itzel Salazar made 12-of-14 free throws, scoring a team high 18 points to lead the M State lady Spartans to a 72-64 victory over Minnesota North College-Rainy River at the Central Lakes Classic on Saturday in Brainerd.
Dehler also had 3 assists and 3 steals, while Salazar pulled down 6 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and came up with a pair of steals. Hailey Nelson was also in double figures with 14 points. She added 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Ashley Dreger chipped in with 8 points and 4 assists.
M State led 15-14 after one quarter, increased their lead to 35-26 at the half, had a 53-38 advantage after three and held off the Voyageurs in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The lady Spartans made 34.5% (20-58) of their field goal attempts and held a 53-45 edge on the boards.
Kiarra Edley (18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals), Shamiyah Bradford (11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists) and Kyss Benoit (10 points, 10 rebounds) were the leaders for Rainy River. Maddie Lowe added 9 rebounds off the bench and Azahriah Ellis finished with 8 points.
M State (6-5) will host the Spartan Classic on Friday, December 30 when they play Minnesota North College-Itasca, and Saturday, December 31 when they go up against Sisseton-Wahpeton College.
