A strong blend of inside and outside attack helped the 14th ranked Class AA Yellowjackets to a 69-48 victory over the fourth ranked team in Class A on December 6 at the Hive. The Yellowjackets had three players finish in double figures with Willow Thiel leading all scorers with 19 points. Mya Morris and Olivia Pilgrim finished with 18 points each in the win.

The Yellowjackets built up a 32-19 first half lead, which featured a surge of baskets in the closing minutes of the first half. However, the Rockets rallied back in the second half, but it was a pair of key 3-pointers from Pilgrim that helped the Yellowjackets regain control of the game and cruise to the 21-point home win, marking the third straight victory for the Yellowjackets and second straight against a top-10 team in their class. Cora Grismer added eight points for the Yellowjackets, while Kaia Anderson, Kennedy Pilgrim and Cate Diggins added two each.

After a sluggish start, the Perham Yellowjackets took over in the first half and spoiled the 2022-23 home opener for the Frazee Hornets with a 60-41 victory on December 8.

Willow Thiel led all scorers with 20 points, 13 of them coming in the first half. Olivia Pilgrim ended in double figures as well with 12 points, helping the Yellowjackets to their fourth straight victory to start the new season.

Perham trailed for much of the first half but eventually took over when Thiel took control of the interior. She finished with 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals to go with her game-high of 20 points.

Defensively, the Yellowjackets recorded 17 steals in the road win and had a solid night at the free throw line, hitting on 18 of their 24 attempts.

Mya Morris and Cora Grismer finished with nine points each, while Cate Diggins added four points. Kennedy Pilgrim and Kaia Anderson each ended with three points.

Perham will host Park Rapids Area on Tuesday night and will play a Heart O’ Lakes Conference game at Pelican Rapids on Friday.
