Trailing 2-1 after the first period, Fergus Falls put three power play goals on the board in the second period to take control of their game against Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday night. The Otters had 34 shots on goal in their 5-2 victory over the Storm. Ben Swanson made 23 saves in the Otter net.
“Our power play came alive with 3 goals in the second period,” reported Fergus Falls Head Coach Mike Donaghue. “We played a good game after the first period as we managed the puck much better the last two periods.”
Kellen Stenstrom got the scoring started with a goal just sixteen seconds into the game, assisted by Shane Zierden. Sauk Rapids-Rice pulled even when Teagan Dodge scored on the power play at 8:42, assisted by Nolan Thell and John Claypool. Benjamin Kulus gave the Storm a 2-1 lead at 16:34, assisted by Dodge and Nick Anderson.
Jack Welde got things going for the Otters in the second period when he converted a pass from Joey Johnson to tie the game at 2-2 at the 10:23 mark of the period. Colin Becker’s goal at 11:24 was assisted by Brayden Nelson and Stenstrom, and it gave the Otters the lead at 3-2. 27 seconds later Michael Schmidt completed the 3 goals in 1:31 stretch with an assist from Sam Dirkman and the Otters led 4-2.
Zierden finished the scoring with a goal at 8:58 of the third period, assisted by Becker and Ethan McGuiness.
The Otters (2-2) will travel to Brainerd for a Central Lakes Conference match on Tuesday night and they will finally get a home game on Thursday, December 15 against Willmar. That will start a stretch of five straight home games after opening the season with five in a row on the road.
The JV tied 2-2 with Riley McGovern and Henry Greenagel netting the goals.
