Matt Askegaard is swapping out his referee’s whistle for the coaches’ whistle as he takes over the head coaching spot for the Barnesville boys’ basketball team, making a return to the bench.  Askegaard will be assisted by Jenson Beachy and Adam Tonsfeldt and will take over a team that finished 14-11 a year ago and returns a large number of seniors (11) and boasts a total of almost 40 players in grades 9-12.

“We return a large amount of seniors from last year’s squad,” acknowledged Askegaard.  “We will be leaning on them for their leadership.  Last year’s JV team had a great amount of success and we expect for that to carry over.  Our depth will be one of our greatest strengths.  With the amount of players at practice we will have a great amount of competition each day.  To go along with all that, all of these guys are very athletic and love to compete.  With our large numbers, we won’t have to rely on one or two guys on a nightly basis and I can see having anywhere from six to eight guys really step up.”

Returning letter winners are seniors Tate Inniger (Wing) and Wyatt Suter (Wing), junior Zachary Bredman (Guard) and sophomore Gannon Bolgrean (Guard).  Other players looking for varsity minutes are seniors Owen Riddle (Wing), Braeden Bredman (Wing), Isaac Maneval (Wing) and Carson Hagen (Wing).

“Even with a large amount of seniors, experience at the varsity level will be one of our weaknesses,” added Coach Askegaard.  “However, these guys have played many years together and know each other very well.”

Askegaard looks to DGF, Hawley, Pelican Rapids and Perham to be the top teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, with Thief River Falls being added to that list as the favorites in Section 8AA.
