West Central Area Volleyball Season Recap and Awards

The West Central Area Knights had another successful volleyball season.  They finished the season with an 18-10 record.  With only one senior, Lexi Hunter, the Knights were not without varsity experience.  Several athletes had one to three years of playing under their belts. 

Highlights of this season started with a strong performance in their home opener against defending class AA state champions Sauk Centre.  Although the Knights lost that game in four close sets, they went on to win the next eight games in a row.  In the fourth game of this season, Macy Grosz accomplished something no other Knights volleyball player has ever accomplished in the history of the program, setting her 1,000th career assist.  The Knights went on to be champions of the Wheaton tournament for the second year in a row.  They also earned a second place finish in the Parkers Prairie tournament, losing to Browerville in three sets in the championship game.  Every game this season was competitive, there was never room to have a string of errors or lose momentum.  Every team was tough! The Knights finished their season with a tough loss to Litchfield in the first round of section play. 

Other accomplishments achieved by this talented team were West Central All-Conference honors to Macy Grosz and Mya FoslienWhitney Westrom received honorable mention.  Sophomore Mya Foslien was voted the most valuable player of the West Central Conference.  Macy Grosz not only broke 1,000 career assists, she now sits at number one in single match set assists (51) and single season set assists (812) in the history of WCA. Mya Foslien is on top of the record books with 405 kills this season.  The team was awarded academic honors by the Minnesota Coaches Association.  They achieved silver status with a team GPA between 3.5-3.74. Lexi Hunter received the academic All-State award that is for seniors who maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher.

Leaders for this season’s stats were: Whitney Westrom with the most ace serves (41), Macy Grosz with 812 set assists, Mya Foslien 405 kills, Defensive leaders were Mya Foslien (335 digs), Sophie Sanstead (332 digs), and Madelyn Westrom (333 digs), Whitney Westrom led in blocks with 31, and serving steadily at  95% were both Macy Grosz and Mya Foslien.  

Letterwinners for the Knights: Freshmen Nora Anderson and Izzy Puchalski.  Sophomores Sophie Sanstead, Macy Grosz, Mya Foslien, Addison Staples, Wylie McNally and manager Jayden Styba.  Juniors Alaina Sykora, Madelyn and Whitney Westrom, and senior Lexi Hunter. Freshman Madison Fagre finished the season on the varsity roster as well. 

Team award winners voted on by coaches and players were: most improved-Lexi Hunter, Miss Hustle-Izzy Puchalski, most valuable offense- Macy Grosz, most valuable defense- to both Madelyn Westrom and Sophie Sanstead, and the most valuable teammate (Knights Award)- Mya Foslien.

This team has something special! They play with fire and passion for the game.  Coaches have been told more than once that this team is so fun to watch! They have big goals for the future and they hope to accomplish their goals and know that it won’t be possible without the support of their community.
