The M State lady Spartans feature two sophomore post players who will be capable of dominating in the paint this season as Emily Dehler (Pierz) and Lindsey Kurz (Climax) return from the 11-14 team of a year ago.  Dehler and Kurz will lead a young team into the tough MCAC Southern Division schedule which features two teams, Rochester and Minnesota West, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament last year.

“We have been hitting the fundamentals hard since October third when we started our season,” commented Head Coach Jodi Holleman.  “We want to improve every single day and create a lot of noise in the South half with a goal of finishing in the top four so we can go to the Regional Tournament.”

In addition to Dehler and Kurz, Holleman will be counting on guard Alyssa Romberg (Sleepy Eye) to provide some outside scoring.  A lot of freshman will need to be ready to contribute right away.  Itzel Salazar from LPGE will be playing point guard.  Ashley Dreger from Parkers Prairie will be playing shooting guard, along with Hailey Nelson from Sisseton and Kiera Cox from Bloomington Kennedy.  Keely Foley from Montevideo is a utility player that can play any position on the court.  Meg Moberg from Ortonville is a “rebounding machine” according to Holleman, while Brooke Finken from Melrose can play inside and shoot the 3.  Caitlin Baardsen (Perham) and Carissa Peterson (Roseville) will add depth in the post.  The Spartans are also hoping to add Andreya Lockett (Fergus Falls) after the Christmas break.  “She is extremely athletic and an outstanding shooter,” said Holleman.

Holleman adds Riverland and Anoka-Ramsey to Rochester and Minnesota West as strong teams in the MCAC South.

Kayla Feldhake (Alexandria) is back as Holleman’s assistant coach.
