Minneota Shuts Down Breckenridge Running Game, Advances with 35-7 Win

The Minneota Vikings shut down a powerful Breckenridge running attack in the snow in Alexandria on Friday night, holding the Cowboys to just 66 yards as they punched their ticket to the Class A semifinals at US Bank Stadium with an impressive 35-7 win.

Minneota scored on the first possession of the game, however, Breckenridge pulled even at 7-7 when Paul Armitage took the ensuing kick-off 97 yards for a TD and the Cowboys added the extra point kick.  Minneota took a 13-7 lead on a 4 yard TD run and then added a second quarter TD from 16 yards out and a two-point conversion for a 21-7 halftime lead.

A 17 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and a 13 yard TD run in the fourth, along with a pair of successful PAT kicks put the final at 35-7.

Cam Nieto managed 32 yards rushing on 11 attempts to lead the Cowboys and Gavin Pederson was held to 22 yards on 8 attempts.

Minneota finished with 260 rushing yards and 19 yards passing for 279 yards of total offense.  They had 20 first downs, while holding Breckenridge to 5.

SCORING DRIVES:
Q1          After a short Breckenridge punt into the wind Minneota started on the Breckenridge 44 yard line. 5 plays 44 yards Zach Fier scores on a 19 yard run Paten Gillund kick made it 7-0 at 7:15 of the first.

Q1          Ensuing KO Paul Armitage 97 yard KO return up the middle, Baily Evans kick made it 7-7 at 7:00 of the first.

Q1          Minneota next possession 56 yards on 6 plays Anthony Rybinski scores on a 4 yard run PAT fails 13-7 with 2:02 left in the first.

Q2          Breckenridge from deep in their own 25 ran 5 plays and fumbled Minneota recovered on the Breckenridge 38.  5 plays 38 yards Ryan Meagher 14 yard run, Isaac Pohlen sneaks the conversion 21-7 with 4:54 left in the half.

Q3          No scoring, but Minneota took the second half kickoff and ran 17 plays using 9:30 minutes before they missed a 28 yard field goal attempt.  Breckenridge got the ball at their own 20 and on their third play they fumbled with Minneota recovering on the Breckenridge 23 yard line.

Q4          Following the fumble Minneota scores on a 5 play 23 yard drive with a 17 yard pass from Isaac Pohlen to Peyton Gillund, Gillund kicked the PAT making it 28-7 with 11:14 left to play.

Q4          Breckenridge going for it on 4th down had a bad snap and it was covered up on the 13 yard line.  Minneota scored on a 1 play 13 yard run by Ryan Meagher, Gillund added the PAT 35-7 with 9:38 left.  Both teams started subbing down.
