East Grand Forks Knocks Perham Out of Section Football Playoffs

Perham hosted East Grand Forks in the semifinal round of the Section 8AAA high school football playoffs on Saturday and the Green Wave handed the Yellowjackets a 24-21 defeat.  The loss puts Perham on the sidelines and the win advances EGF to the Section championship game against DGF on Friday at the Fargodome.

Perham took a 7-0 first quarter lead on a 38yard pass to Gage Aanenson from Blaiz Schmidt and a Hudson Hackel extra point kick.

At 7:05 of the second quarter Clyde Anderson ran the ball in from 5 yards out and Drew Carpenter booted the PAT as the Green Wave tied the game at 7-7.  East Grand took a 10-7 lead into the locker room at halftime when Carpenter drilled a 41 yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the half.

Carpenter’s one yard run and PAT kick increased the Green Wave lead to 17-7 after three quarters of play.

Caleb Schmiedeberg scored on a 2 yard run and Carpenter added another extra point kick for a 24-7 Green Wave lead at the 3:01 mark of the fourth quarter.  With 1:42 left in the game Evan Kovash caught a 10 yard pass from Blaiz Schmidt and Hackel added the extra point to cut the lead to 24-14.  Perham got the ball back and scored on a 15 yard pass from Schmidt to Aaneson and a Hackel kick with 1:04 to play, putting the final score at 24-21.

East Grand Forks had 286 total yards (213 rushing, 73 passing).  Clyde Anderson (19 carries, 97 yards, TD) and Schmiedeberg (19 carries, 96 yards) led the Green Wave ground attack.  Carpenter completed 4-of-6 passes for 73 yards and Cooper Smith caught 3 passes for 72 yards.  John Anderson had an interception for the Green Wave.

Perham finished with 271 total yards (89 rushing, 182 passing).  Hudson Hackel ran for 52 yards on 9 carries, Schmidt completed 13-of-24 passes for 182 yards and 3 TD’s, and Kovash had 4 catches for 62 yards and a score.  Aanenson caught three balls for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Aanenson forced a fumble and Noah Thompson had a fumble recovery to pace the defense.  Ben Shumansky (3 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles), Aanenson (7 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles) and Carson Beyer (5 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles) were the defensive leaders for Perham.

East Grand Forks will face DGF for the Section title at 8:00pm Thursday at the Fargodome.
