Fast Start Carries Yellowjackets to 34-7 Win Over Park Rapids

The Perham football team started the 8AAA playoffs with a convincing 34-7 win over Park Rapids Area on Tuesday night.  The Yellowjackets scored two first quarter touchdowns and added a pair of second quarter TD’s to build a 27-0 halftime lead.  Each team scored 7 third quarter points to end the scoring for the night.  Perham will now host East Grand Forks on Saturday at 2:00pm at Ted Meinhover Field.

Hudson Hackel scored the first touchdown of the night at the 9:57 mark of the opening quarter on a 4 yard run, capping a 5 play, 65-yard drive and giving Perham a 6-0 lead.  Blaiz Schmidt then connected with Noah Thompson on a 60 yard TD pass with 3:43 left in the quarter.  A two-point conversion run by Braylon Rach put the Yellowjackets up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Thompson hauled in a 42 yard scoring toss from Schmidt with 5:38 left in the half and Schmidt scored on a one yard run with just six seconds left before halftime.  A Hackel kick after the Schmidt TD increased the Perham lead to 27-0 heading into the locker room.

Park Rapids Area scored with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter when Matt Johanning caught a 33 yard pass from Noah Morris and Morris added the PAT kick to cut the lead to 72-7.  On the ensuing kickoff Hackel went 82 yards and then booted the extra point for a 34-7 Perham lead.

Perham ran for 143 yards and passed for 124, giving them 267 yards of total offense.  They were led by Braylon Rach (88 carries, 87 yards), Noah Thompson (2 catches, 102 yards, 2 TD’s) and Blaiz Schmidt (5-of-7 passing, 124 yards, 2 TD’s).Defensive leaders were Ben Shumansky (6 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles), Carson Beyer (3 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles) and Gage Aanenson (4 solo tackles 1 assisted tackle).

Park Rapids Area had 232 total yards (99 rushing, 133 passing).  Noah Morris led the Panther rushing attack with 13 carries and 66 yards.  He also completed 11-of-18 passes for 133 yards.  Luke Hartung (5 catches, 38 yards) and Matt Johanning (4 catches, 53 yards, TD) were the leading receivers.
