Pelican Rapids hosted Hawley for the last Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball match of the season on Tuesday night.  It was senior night for the Vikings as they honored their two seniors, Kia Nelson and Kelsey Isaman.  The Vikings were coming off a long 5-set match against Staples-Motley on Monday, but were excited to take on the Nuggets.  Hawley had a little more in the tank and posted a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-13) victory.

“We started strong and were point-for-point with the Nuggets in the first set,” said Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “We served aggressively and kept ourselves in system.  Setters Ellie Welch and Anna Roisum did a good job moving the ball around and getting our outside hitters where they needed the ball to score.  Defensively, libero Morgan Korf did a good job reading the hitters and our defensive specialist had some digs for us.  It was a great back-and-forth battle, but a few tight net calls and a ball control mistake gave the Nuggets the edge.  In set 2 we struggled to serve receive their short serves and found ourselves down early and came up short.  Set 3 we were flat to start again, but the girls worked really hard and fought through their runs of a fast offense.  We had some trouble slowing them down at the net.”

Leaders for the Vikings were Welch (6 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs, 7 assists), Korf (27 digs, 2 aces), Hazel Haugrud (9 digs), Roisum (8 digs, 1 ace, 3 kills, 11 assists, 1 block), Marie Backstrom (2 aces, 1 block, 1 kill, 2 digs), Isaman (7 digs, 3 kills) and Allie Thompson (4 digs).

The Vikings will participate in the Blocktoberfest Tournament on Thursday in Hawley as they prepare for post season play next week.
