After over 70 minutes of scoreless play on Tuesday in Sauk Centre, the St. Cloud Cathedral boys’ soccer team scored twice in the final ten minutes to record a 2-0 shutout victory over the Fergus Falls Otters, ending the Otters season with a final record of 7-10-1.

“Cathedral dominated on offense the first 25 minutes of the game getting multiple corner kicks and some decent shots,” said Fergus Falls Head coach Joel Heikes.  “Our defense stood strong though and Jayden Mantueful stopped everything that came his way. With about 10 minutes left in the half the Otters applied some pressure on Cathedrals defense but we went into the half tied 0-0.”

Joe Torborg broke the 0-0 tie with a goal in the 72nd minute from inside the 8 yard line.  Jack Stang put the insurance goal in the net with under a minute remaining on the clock.  Noah Henderson was in goal for the shutout.

“During the second half the Otter offense was doing a much better job and Fergus was applying more offensive pressure,” noted Coach Heikes. “This pressure resulted in two corner kicks and a free kick from about the 25 yard line, which the keeper barely saved. With about 10 minutes to go in the game Shane Zierden took the ball deep into the left corner and passed it right into the box past the goalie but just out of the reach of Reno Schierer missing a golden opportunity to take the lead by less than an inch.

The Crusaders will now move on to the Class A State Boys Soccer Tournament which begins next week.

Fergus Falls finishes their season with a final record of 7-10-1.

“The Otters played an outstanding game, playing it the right way”, added Heikes. “Offense and defense worked together very well and I am very proud of their accomplishments. Cathedral is a very good team and it was either team's game right up until the final seconds.”
