Verndale Suffers First Loss at Hands of Unbeaten Warriors

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross scored the final 21 points of their game against Verndale on Friday night, overcoming an 8-7 third quarter deficit to defeat the Pirates, 29-8, handing Verndale their first loss of the season.  The Warriors had 386 total yards compared to 218 for Verndale, with 237 coming by way of the pass.  They also 19 first down to the Pirates 9.

Andrew Walker scored the only touchdown of the first half when he caught a 5 yard pass from Marshall TolifsonClint Determan’s PAT kick made it 7-0.

Verndale took the lead on a 4 yard TD run and a successful two-point conversion in the third quarter.  Tolifson then scored on a 10 yard run and Determan added the PAT kick to give the Warriors 14-8.  Tolifson then connected with Determan on an 84 yard TD pass and Bryant Callenius ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-8 lead for Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.

Walker got his second TD of the game when he brought in a 20 yard pass from Tolifson.  Another Determan PAT kick put the final score at 29-8 in favor of the Warriors.

Tolifson completed 13-of-21 passes for 237 yards and 3 scores.  Walker caught 5 passes for 88 yards and 2 TD’s.  Brayden Hofer led the rushing attack with 60 yards on 8 carries and Tolifson carried the ball 14 times for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively, Callenius led the way with 11 tackles and a sack.  Dylan Bainbridge intercepted a pass and Caden Spilde recovered a fumble.

No Verndale stats were reported.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross (7-0) will play at Sebeka (3-4) on Wednesday night.

Verndale (6-1) is at Brandon-Evansville (4-3) on Wednesday.
