Cougars Win Shootout in Underwood

Ada-Borup and Underwood got into a shootout on Friday night with the Cougars coming out on top, 52-34.  Ada-Borup led 12-7 after one quarter, 39-7 at the half and at the end of three quarters, and the Rockets outscored them 27-13 over the final 12 minutes to make the final 52-34.

The Cougars ran for 168 yards and passed for 259, compiling 427 total yards on the night.  Underwood finished with 264 yards of total offense, 109 passing and 155 rushing.

Ada-Borup got on the board when Aiden Marcussen completed a 9 yard TD pass to Cameron Spaeth with 9:13 left in the first quarter.  They made it 12-0 on a 27-yard TD hookup between Marcussen and Spaeth at 2:57 of the first quarter. Underwood scored on an 86 yard kickoff return by Blayre Lundgren and an extra point kick by Jack Parker to cut the Cougars lead to 12-7 after one.

Marcussen and Spaeth connected on a pair of second quarter touchdowns, covering 6 yards and 53 yards, and Lance Kritzberger hauled in a 29 yard toss from Marcussen with 34 seconds left in the half.  After a PAT kick by Tate Jacobson the Cougars had a 39-7 halftime advantage.

The Underwood offensive came alive in the fourth quarter with a 35 yard run by Collin Lukken and a Parker extra point kick with 8:09 remaining in the game.  A 70 yard kickoff return for a score and a successful PAT kick gave the Cougars a 46-14 lead, however, Blayre Lundgren returning his second kick of the night 75 yards for an Underwood score.  Parker tacked on the extra point kick to cut the lead to 46-21.  Drew Evavold hit Owen Harig for a 40 yard TD and Parker made the score 46-28 with another extra point kick.  After Shawn Green of Ada-Borup broke free for a 64 yard TD run, Underwood ended the scoring with a 3 yard TD run by Evan Lundgren.

Marcussen was quite efficient throwing the ball as he completed 12-of-14 pass attempts for 259 yards and 6 TD’s. Spaeth caught 7 passes for 150 yards and 5 scores, while Kritzberger was on the receiving end of 3 passes for 74 yards and a TD.  Green led the rushing attack with 75 yards on 5 carries.

Leaders for Underwood were Lukken (10 carries, 57 yards), Conner Nelson 92 catches, 22 yards), Blayre Lundgren (1 catch, 46 yards), Owen Harig (1 catch 40 yards, 1 TD, 10 carries, 32 yards) and Noah Link (5 completions, 12 attempts, 69 yards).  Defensively, Brock Hasling had 3 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles to lead the Rockets.  Lundgren had 4 kickoff returns for 171 yards and 2 TD’s.

Underwood will close out their regular season schedule on Wednesday night when they host West Central Area/Ashby.
