The Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Cross Country team held its home meet at Pine Ridge on Thursday. “It was a gorgeous evening for a race, even with the wind,” reported Head Coach Robert Bosma. “The team is running really well right now and had a lot of support from fans, so they really wanted to make a statement with their times. From a coaching perspective, I think they ran amazingly.”

Bertha-Hewitt won the boys’ meet with 27 points and Ottertail Central was second with 52.  They were followed by Wadena-Deer Creek with 70, Ashby-Brandon-Evansville with 104, Parkers Prairie with 109 and New York Mills with 154.  Brady Rach of Bertha-Hewitt was the individual winner with his teammate, Zane Guderjahn taking runner-up honors and James Suchy of Parkers Prairie claiming third place.

“The last couple meets had fast race courses with fast times,” continued Bosma. “Fergus had a lot of bigger schools to push the tempo, Wheaton was flatter with gradual hills, and Perham had a lot of people with virtually no hills. Pine Ridge on the other hand is one of the harder courses we see in the season, so I did not expect major PRs, but a couple were close.”

Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Boys Results
8. Logan Froemming 18:28.0, 18. Kenneth Spielman 20:13.9, 20. Carter White 20:30.8, 28. Logan Haseman 21:55.6, 30. Donell Lee 22:35.7, 31. Darius Grussing 22:40.2, 38. Cohen Reiland 25:05.8

Logan Froemming is running determined and focused right now,” said Bosma. “He knew what he wanted to do and ran an incredibly hard fought race. He was just seconds off his PR (Run at Perham), so with this confidence, I can't wait to see what he's going to do at Conference and Sections. Carter White is someone who is new to the sport and has only run one other meet, but is making his mark on this team. He has a lot of potential if he keeps working hard.  Ken Spielman and Logan Haseman are running steady right now and looking more relaxed each meet. Some of the other guys in JV and varsity are battling injuries or recovering from being sick, but if they can get healthy, they have been running great.”

Wadena-Deer Creek won the girls’ race with 22 points and Ottertail Central was second with 42.  New York Mills placed third with 71 points.  Ashby-Brandon-Evansville didn’t field a full varsity team.  Katie Holzner of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy was the individual champion, Norah Froslee of OTC was runner-up and Britta Sweeney of Wadena-Deer Creek finished third.

“On the girls' side, Ashley Paulson ran well,” noted Coach Bosma. “She is a competitor and she is getting into her own right now. Naomi Fournier ran well today. I gave her the choice to run JV or Varsity knowing she could probably get a JV medal, but she chose to run Varsity. Her improvement from the first race is amazing and she is figuring out the race strategy.

The Junior High teams are getting stronger every race. Some of the girls float back and forth between running Varsity, JV, or JH. They are learning to compete and are pushing each other every day.”
