The Breckenridge Cowboys rushed for nearly 400 yards Friday night as they recorded a 45-36 win over the West Central Area/Ashby Knights on homecoming night in Barrett.  Cam Nieto led the Cowboys with 190 yards on 21 carries, reaching the end zone four times, while fullback Gavin Pederson turned in a 154 yard performance on 29 carries, scoring one touchdown.

Breckenridge drove the ball down to the Knights two yard line on the first possession of the evening, but an errant snap pushed them back to the 14 and forced a field goal attempt that was successful from 31 yards by Gusten Bergkvist-Eriksson.  Following a WCA/Ashby fumble the Cowboys scored on a one yard run by Nieto and a Bergkvist-Eriksson extra-point kick for a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Knights then went 66 yards in 8 plays for their first TD of the night.  The drive was highlighted by a 48 yard pass from Brady Lindquist to Nas Dotts, setting up a 7 yard TD run by Anthony Sykora.  Lindquist then delivered a two-point conversion pass to Hunter Gruchow to cut the Breckenridge lead to 10-8.  The Cowboys than went 71 yards in 12 plays with Nieto scoring on a 12 yard run and Bergkvist-Eriksson booting the PAT for a 17-8 lead with 4:15 remaining in the first half.  West Central Area/Ashby responded with a 5 yard TD pass from Lindquist to Cole Anderson and a two-point conversion pass from Lindquist to Sykora, putting the halftime score at Breckenridge 17, West Central Area/Ashby 16.

The Knights took their first and only lead of the night on the first possession of the second half when Anderson hauled in a 42 yard TD pass from Lindquist and the quarterback ran in the two-point conversion for a 24-17 lead.  The lead was short lived as the Cowboys went 66 yards in 12 plays and scored on a one yard run by Pederson.  Bergkvist-Eriksson tied the game at 24-24 with his extra-point kick.  Breckenridge stopped the Knights on down and regained the lead with 26.4 seconds left in the third quarter on a 27 yard run by Alex Sanchez and another PAT kick by Bergkvist-Eriksson, making the score 31-24, Breckenridge.

After another stop on downs by the Breckenridge defense, the Cowboys increased their lead to 38-24 with a Nieto 16 yard run and Bergkvist-Eriksson’s extra point kick.  WCA/Ashby then hit on a 69 yard pass from Sykora to Anderson to pull within 8 at 38-30.  Breckenridge upped their advantage to 45-30 with an 18 yard run by Nieto and a Bergkvist-Eriksson PAT kick with 2:32 left in the game.  The Knights closed out the scoring when Lindquist hooked up with Sykora on a 14 yard pass to make the final score, 45-36.

West Central Area/Ashby finished with 318 passing yards and 387 total yards.  Anderson caught 6 passes for 176 yards and 3 TD’s, and Dotts caught 3 balls for 82 yards.  Sykora had 4 receptions for 42 yards and a score, but he was held to just 39 yards on the ground.  Lindquist completed 14-of-20 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, and Sykora hit on 2-of-3 pass attempts for 119 yards and a score.

The Knights (4-2) had their four game losing streak snapped.  They will host Osakis next Friday night in Barrett.
