West Central Area and Minnewaska Area battled through five tough sets of high school volleyball on Thursday night in Barrett with the visiting Lakers defeating the lady Knights 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13).  Mya Foslien surpassed 300 kills on the season in the contest.

The lady Knights were led by Mya Foslien (23 kills, 23 digs, 15/15 serving, 2 aces), Macy Grosz (51 set assists, 28 digs, 24/24 serving, 1 ace, 1 block), Madelyn Westrom (17/17 serving, 25 digs, 4 kills), Sophie Sanstead (29 digs), Izzy Puchalski (13 digs, 10 kills, 12/12 serving), Whitney Westrom (12/13 serving, 1 ace, 11 digs, 6 kills, 5 blocks), Lexi Hunter (19/19 serving, 2 digs) and Addison Staples (19 kills, 3 digs, 1 block).

“We had a very slow start in the first set, but the girls fought back and slowly started to gain momentum into the second set,” noted WCA Head Coach Missy Foslien.  “We had the lead for most of the second set, but let the Lakers go on scoring runs to get right back in it.  The team made up their mind they weren’t going home in three.  They played with heart and intensity that we hadn’t seen in a few games.  All of our defensive players, Sophie Sanstead, Alaina Sykora, Madelyn Westrom and Mya Foslien played excellent.  We were able to win sets 3 and 4 but we had a little passing slump to start the fifth set, but came back with some aggressive plays but it just wasn’t enough to win.  The girls felt good about how they played.  We have to get touches on blocks, we have to play scrappy defense and we have to hit the ball hard.  The girls believe again in themselves and I think we will be okay going into the final games of our season.”

West Central Area (13-7) will play at Benson on Tuesday and will face BOLD on Thursday in another road contest.
