After dropping the first set of the night to Ashby, 25-22, Battle Lake came back strong to even the match with an impressive 25-10 win in set two.  The Battlers had a tougher time in sets 3 and 4, but won both, 26-24 and 25-23 to claim a 3-1 Little Eight Conference volleyball victory over the Arrows.

“We got off to a slow start and it took a while for the girls to gain momentum, but they found their groove in set two,” said Battle Lake Head Coach Jenny Roisum.  “Sets 3 and 4 came down to the wire with both teams playing good defense.  The Battlers were able to stay confident right to the end.  This was a good win tonight and we were able to see improvement form the first match of the year.”

Sophie Akerman played great defense and led Battle Lake with 24 digs and 29 assists.  Morgan Malone added 13 kills.  Quinn Amundson had 13 digs and was 27-of-28 serving, while Kenady Cameron added 9 kills and 3 blocks.  The Battlers are off until next Thrusday when they face Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

Leaders for Ashby were Haleigh Brendmoen (5 digs, 19 assists, 12/15 serving, 3 aces), BrookeLinn Finkelson (10 kills, 1 block, 11/14 serving, 1 ace), Ryleigh Brendmoen (7 kills, 7/.9 serving, 1 ace, 11 assists), Chloe Finkelson (6 kills, 2 blocks), Livy Johnson (6 kills, 14/14 serving, 1 block, 7 digs), Jess Schlundt (3 kills, 6 blocks), Lucy Ohren (5/5 serving, 2 aces, 18 digs) and Alyssa Johnson (11/14 serving, 6 digs).

“After adjusting our rotation quite a bit this week, we seemed to get into a rhythm and things gelled well with this new setup,” commented Ashby Head Coach Hayley Stevens.  “Unforced errors hut us tonight and in moments of panic we struggled to keep our momentum and instead passed over it.  Sometimes finding a new niche when losing players to injury or other situations makes players step up into new roles where it can be difficult to accept, but it seems like the girls are up to the challenge.”

The Arrows head to Brandon-Evansville next Tuesday and will host Parkers Prairie on Thursday in their final home match.
