Alexandria won the John Hermes Girls Cross Country Invitational on Thursday with a score of 25 points.  Moorhead was second with 46 and Fergus Falls took third with 84 points.  “The Otter girls had an amazing third place finish, coming together as a team,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Niki Welde.  “Cassie Wellman led us as she continues to grow stronger in the section and conference.  She was this week’s CLC Cross Country Athlete of the Week and it was well deserved.”

Wellman faced a back-and-forth battle with Apollo’s Zili Lenzner and Alexandria’a Brooklyn Jurchenko, splitting the different with them in the end.  “Cassie’s determining during a race does not fail her,” added Coach Welde.

Naomi Dummer, Savannah Lee and Sara Grotberg finished closely in the next three Otter spots.  Lee posted a season best on a tough Otter course.  Julia Anderson ran a season best by over a minute.  “This is a challenging course,” noted Welde.  “We go into this meet knowing that we will have improvements to our season, but it may not show up in times due to the challenging nature of the course.  To run more than a minute off her season best is amazing.  Her hard work is paying off.  Becca Schindler and Hannah Scharnberg both ran near their best times this season.  Each ran strong and helped in our finish.”

“The Mighty Otter Pep Band warmed up the runners today, the weather was pleasantly cool, and the competition was fantastic,” summarized Coach Welde.  “All this led to a great Otter Homecoming event held on the perfectly groomed, Pebble Lake Golf Course.  Thank you to the Kiwanis for sending volunteers to help make this event a success.  Thank you to the staff at the Pebble Lake Golf Course for providing the support and a beautiful course, and thank you to all the parent volunteers who help make this all come together.”
