Pelican Rapids paid a visit to Fergus Falls for a boys’ soccer game on Saturday afternoon. The game started with a light rain falling, but by halftime the rain had stopped. The first half was scoreless with Pelican Rapids having a couple of good scoring opportunities. Fergus Falls goalkeeper Jaydon Manteufel made a diving save on a ball headed to the short side of the net and the Vikings fired a shot wide of a wide open left side of the net. Things started happening in the second half and the Otters recorded a 2-1 victory over the Vikings.
The first goal came when Pelican keeper Arturo Zavala dove to make a save but the fall landed on the ground in front of the net and a Viking defender put it in his own net while trying to clear it, giving Fergus Falls the 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Shane Zierden found the back of the net, giving the home team a 2-0 lead with just over half of the second half remaining. Pelican Rapids was awarded a penalty kick with just over 17 minutes to play and Abdirahman Khalif beat Manteufel to cut the Fergus Falls lead to 2-1. That’s the way the game ended.
Fergus Falls improved their season record to 5-4-1 with the win. They will go to Cold Spring to face Rocori on Tuesday and will host Detroit Lakes on Thursday.
Pelican Rapids (2-8) will travel to Bemidji on Tuesday and will host Hillcrest Lutheran Academy at 2:00pm Saturday.
