Rondarius Gregory had a big day for the M State football team on Saturday, rushing for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and catching 3 passes for 56 yards. In addition to a 53 point performance by the offense, the Spartan defense was able to hold Vermilion to just 81 total yards in their 53-6 victory. M State improved to 4-0 with the win.
The Spartans scored 29 first quarter points to take control of the game and opened up a 46-0 lead after three quarters.
Isaac Freitag caught a 7 yard TD pass from KJ Cooper and Carsen McKnight added an extra point kick for a 7-0 M State lead. A 46 yard interception return by Alieu Conteh and a McKnight kick put the score at 14-0. The defense recorded a safety making it a 16-0 game and a 5 yard run by Cooper, followed by a McKnight PAT kick gave the Spartans a 23-0 lead. DeShawn Carter then went 37 yards with an interception for a 29-0 lead.
Gregory scored back-to-back TD’s in the third quarter on runs of 42 and 28 yards. McKnight tacked on PAT kicks after each score for a 43-0 advantage. McKnight’s 33 yard field goal put the score at 46-0 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter Ian Stanton took the ball over the goal line from the one yard line and McKnight once again booted the extra point for a 53-0 lead.
The only Vermilion touchdown came on a 17 yard pass from Quantarius Armstrong to Cartel Lamb.
Cooper completed 10-of-22 passes for 144 yards, Stanton ran for 81 yards on 12 carries and Freitag had 4 catches for 43 yards. Conteh, Carter and Jordan Medreno each had an interception. Jihad Burroughs had a pair of sacks, while Danny Disterhaft and Keondre Hodges each recorded one sack. JoQuez Sanders and Sam Tagg were the tackling leaders with 6 and 5, respectively.
M State will host Nassau Community College at noon on Saturday.
