The Barnesville volleyball team traveled to Hawley for their Booster Tournament on Saturday where they finished with a 2-2 record for the day and a fifth place finish.  The lady Trojans went 1-2 in pool play, losing in two sets to Detroit Lakes, falling in 3 sets to Lake of the Woods and beating Thief River Falls in two sets.  In their final contest they were able to defeat Wheaton/Herman-Norcross to end on a winning note.

“We were competitive with DL and made some great plays against a strong team with athletic players,” commented Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard.  “They have a strong outside who is a D1 commit, as well as a setter who is going to UMD next year.  They always put up a big attack, as well as having a big block at the net.  We played them tight, however, they were just too much for us.  Lake of the Woods ran a unique offense with a quick ball to the outside and then their middles would run behind the setter.  This took us a little bit to pick up their style, but we played great defense and dug up many balls in the backcourt.  Our block did a nice job up on the net getting touches on hard hit balls.  We really had our chances in this one and needed to just put the ball away when we had the opportunity.  We played out style of play against Thief River and did a great job moving the ball along the net.  Our serve receive was flawless to start out the first set and then we started to miss a couple passes here and there which allowed the Prowlers to sneak back in instead of us closing the door on the match.  We held on with our defense really working the backcourt.  We saw some great things against Wheaton as we were able to work on a few things we need to practice.  The girls played hard and it was a great team effort as you could just see the energy draining from us as we played 3 matches in a row with no break or food!  They battled well and finished the day with a win.”

Stat leaders for the four matches were Emily Smith (29 kills, 94.4% serving, 3 aces, 2 solo blocks, 6 block assists), Emily Riddle (20 kills, 2 solo blocks, 4 block assists), Belle Peterson (19 kills, 2 solo blocks, 4 block assists), Amelia Newell (8 kills, 9 set assists, 93.1% serving, 4 aces), Rumley Biewer (7 kills, 51 set assists, 4 ace serves) and Jaida Bontjes (100% serving, 10 set assists).
