Pirates Hand Tigers 44-26 Loss

The Verndale Pirates fell behind 6-0 to the Rothsay Tigers on Friday night, however, the Pirates then scored 30 straight pints to open up a 36-6 advantage at the end of three quarter on the way to a 44-26 victory over the Tigers.

In the first quarter Rothsay forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, and Karter Jensen hit Landen Masserschmit for a 15 yard touchdown pass to go up 6-0. After a pair of defensive stops, Verndale was able to score to go up 8-6. After a punt by Rothsay, Verndale was able to score again going up 16-6. 

In the second quarter Rothsay drove deep into Verndale territory only to throw an interception on the goal line. Verndale was able to score on the pick to go up 22-6 at halftime. 

The third quarter was all Verndale, as the Pirates put up two more scores making it 36-6 at the end of three.

Rothsay was able to score three touchdowns in the third quarter, but it was too late, making the final 44-26. 

“We had plenty of opportunities to make the game much closer, and maybe regain the lead,” said Rothsay Head Coach Joel Meyer. “We just struggled to complete drives. The kids did a great job of continuing to fight as the game went on. Saw a lot of good things, but lots we still have to work on.” 

Karson Jensen led the Tigers running attack with 98 yards on 15 carries.  Karter Jensen added 45 yards on 6 attempts as the Tigers had 262 rushing yards in the game.  Karter also completed 8-of-20 passes for 80 yards and a TD, while Preston Curtis was 4-for-9 throwing the football for 78 yards and a pair of scores.  Rothsay had 158 total passing yards.  Leading receivers were Landen Masserschmit (6 receptions, 67 yards, 2 TD’s) and Matthew Danielson (2 receptions, 59 yards, TD).
