The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to face DGF to compete in their first Heart O’ Lakes Conference matchup of the season.  “Tonight’s game was full of great energy from both sides and so fun to compete in their new gym,” stated Vikings Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “After dropping 2 tight losses last week the Vikings have been working really hard on executing at a higher level and trying to bring more power to our front row.  I was so proud of these girls tonight.  They came ready to play and brought a lot more power to our front row on the offensive end.”

DGF won the first set 25-22.  “We started strong serving aggressively to get DGF out of system and we utilized our opportunities to run a complex offense,” said Coach Isaman.  “Setters and middle hitters Ellie Welch and Anna Roisum did a great job running a more complex offense out of the middle tonight and both had some big runs offensively.  Set 1 was a back and forth battle but some soft play to our front row started scoring for them.”

The Vikings pulled even in the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. “The girls’ new we needed to stay in system ourselves and needed to do a better job with our front row defense,” noted Coach Isaman.  “We also struggled a bit executing out of the back pin but outside hitter Kelsey Isaman really started to get in a groove and had some huge kills for us in the front and back row.  Kelsey played a very solid game for us tonight on both the offensive and defensive end.”

Set 3 saw the Vikings take a 25-22 victory.  “Libero Morgan Korf read the ball so well and dug everything up that the Rebels were throwing her way, and she was super solid on her serve receive,” observed Isaman.  “As a team we serve received at a very high level tonight which gave us so many more opportunities to speed up our offense.”

The Vikings closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.  “We were starting to show a little fatigue as 5 of our players are 6 rotation players,” said Isaman.  “We got a little sloppy at the net and were slow getting to our defensive base.  Then Libero Morgan Korf had a great serving run while setter and middle hitter Anna Roisum used her vision to find some crucial open spots on the court.  Anna Roisum played a very solid all-around game tonight with bringing great power at the net and running our offense with setting at a much higher level than just a week ago.  It was a great back and forth battle in set 4 but the Vikings held on and finished the game strong to earn the win.”

Stat leaders were Korf (4 aces, 33 digs), Isaman (3 aces, 10 kills, 14 digs), Roisum (14 kills, 7 digs, 15 set assists), Welch (2 aces, 8 kills, 12 digs, 15 set assists, 2 block kills) and Hazel Haugrud (14 digs)

“Overall, this was a great win for our girls as they pushed through to finish a tight match with power,” concluded Coach Isaman.

The Vikings will host the Pelican Rapids Invitational tourney on Saturday, September 10th.
