The Rothsay Tigers ran for 358 yards and compiled 450 yards of total offense as they dominated play on Friday night, defeating Bertha-Hewitt by the score of 50-6.  Karson Jensen had 207 yards rushing on 14 carries and found the end zone three times to lead the Tigers.

“In the first quarter we did a nice job of getting rid of the first game jitters,” commented Head Coach Joel Meyer. “Got a big stop right away, and moved the ball into Bertha-Hewitt territory before turning the ball over on downs. We were able to then get a take away when Karter Jensen intercepted a pass. Our next offensive play went for 50 yards when Karter Jensen completed a pass to Landon Messerschmidt. This set up a 15 yard touchdown run for Matthew Danielson.”

Bertha-Hewitt’s next play gave Rothsay their second take away for the game as the Bears fumbled the hand off and the Tigers recovered. This resulted in a 35 yard drive capped off by a 8 yard run by Karter Jensen, making the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, after forcing Bertha-Hewitt to turnover on downs, Karter Jensen hit Matthew Danielson for a 53 yard touchdown pass. On Bertha-Hewitt’s next possession the Tigers were able to get another take away as Matthew Danielson intercepted a pass and returned it into Bears territory. This resulted in a 33 yard drive capped off by a 21 yard touchdown run by Karson Jensen. After forcing a 4th and long situation Conrad Stockinger blocked a punt setting up another touchdown for Karson Jensen. After forcing another Punt from Bertha-Hewitt, Rothsay went down and scored again after a 60 yard run from Matthew Danielson. This resulted in the half-time score of 42-0.

The third quarter started off with the Tigers intercepting another pass from the Bears. On the next play Karson Jensen ran for 55 yards and the score making the score 50-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Bertha-Hewitt was able to get one late touchdown towards the end of the fourth quarter making the final score 50-6.

Matthew Danielson ran the ball 3 times for 115 yards and caught one pass for 53 yards.  Karter Jensen completed 2 for 4 passes for 92 yards and 1 TD.

“I am very pleased with how the game went both offensively and defensively,” noted Coach Meyer. “We were able to move the ball very effectively in both the pass and the run game. I knew that our backs are very athletic coming into the season, but I was nervous that we would not be able to provide the holes up front. I was pleasantly surprised that our boys upfront did a fantastic job. Defensively, I could not be happier about it. It was one of the best defensive performances I have seen out of any Rothsay team. We had 3 Interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, and a blocked punt. We were also able to score on each one of these. I also noticed how great we were in shape and conditioned for the first game. With the first quarter being so close I believe our ability to play at a higher tempo for longer gave us the edge in the second quarter and beyond.”
