The West Central Area volleyball team opened their season against Sauk Centre and lost in four sets, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19.  “Kicking off the season with the defending Class AA State Champions is a little bit intimidating, but the lady Knights didn’t let that get in their way,” said WCA Head Coach Missy Foslien.  “The girls played with a lot of heart and grit, and they were had to beat on defense.  I think we took them by surprise.”

The Knights led for most of the first set as Mya Foslien came out hitting hard and Sophie Sanstead’s defense was unstoppable.  “Our serve receive kept Macy Grosz busy, but she had an impressive 37 assists,” reported Coach Foslien.  “Addison Staples was steady all night at the service line.  Sauk Centre has a pretty tall lineup, so we had to adjust our hitting to get around the block.”

The Knights took set two, but came out flat to start game three.  “We fought to get back from a 9-0 deficit and we knew we needed to gain momentum for the fourth set,” said Foslien.  “A team like that is difficult to defend with three to four players over 6-feet tall when we average 5’6”.  We have some things to work on, but we are super excited to see what the future holds.  If we can continue to play scrappy and aggressively, it should be a fun season.”

The Knights were led by Staples (23/24 serving, 3 aces, 13 kills), Foslien (12/13 serving, 1 ace, 19 digs, 20 kills, 1 block), Grosz (11/11 serving, 1 ace, 11 digs, 37 assists), Sanstead (12 digs), Madelyn Westrom (16 digs) and Whitney Westrom (6 kills, 1 block).
