The M State volleyball team opened their season with an appearance at the Chaparral Invite in Illinois over the weekend. The lady Spartans won 3 of their 4 matches, defeating Joliet Junior College 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-17) and Genesee Community College 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-11) on Friday, and then defeating Harper College 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 14-25, 15-12) before falling to the College of DuPage 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) in Saturday contests.
Leaders against Joliet were Faith Marion (18 kills, 14 digs), Kaia Strom (31 set assists, 6 kills, 9 digs), Bailey Marty (20 digs, 6 aces), Kendra Emery (13 digs), Kaleigh Sip (8 kills), Avery Wanner (10 digs) and Lindsey Kurz (1 solo block, 1 block assist).
Against Genesee the leaders for M State were Marion (9 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces), Strom (22 set assists, 6 digs), Marty (12 digs, 3 aces) and Emery (8 digs).
In the match against Harper the lady Spartans were led by Marion (19 kills, 17 digs), Sip (9 kills), Emily Dehler (8 kills, 7 digs, 2 solo blocks, 2 block assists), Strom (39 set assists, 2 aces, 15 digs), Kaisa Jones (10 digs) and Brooke Hovland (5 kills, 4 digs, 2 block assists, 1 solo block).
Versus College of DuPage M State was led by Sip (7 kills), Strom 14 set assists, 9 digs), Wanner (12 digs, 2 aces), Marion (7 digs, 3 aces) and Jones (5 digs, 3 aces).
M State will open their home season with a conference battle against Minnesota West at 6:30pm on Wednesday in Fergus Falls.
