The third annual Brave Like Gabe Cross Country Invitational was hosted by the Perham Yellowjackets on Saturday.  “Today was an incredible day for the Brave Like Gabe. Temps definitely got on the warmer side with 96% humidity when the varsity races were run. The running though was hot like the weather as all the races were very fast and competitive across all races,” said Perham Head Coach Jeff Morris.

The Perham girls and boys kicked it off with a great performance from our Junior High girls and boys. Both Perham Junior High Girls and Boys teams finished 2nd overall. Tessa Starzl was the individual race winner in the Junior High girls’ race running a 2 mile in a time of 13:48.

In the girls, high school races our Varsity and Junior Varsity were Brave Like Gabe Champions. This is the first time our Varsity girls have won this event and they did it with an awesome pack of Perham girls at the front of the pack. Our varsity girls managed to put 5 girls in the top 15 and 7 girls in the top 22 of the race. Gracie Morris and Quincy Anderson both posted top 10 finishes with Gracie 4th and Quincy 8th. Avalee Brown, Ella Hendrickson, and Mya Morris rounded out the top 5 finishing 11, 13, and 14 respectively. Senior Mya Morris made a return to cross country today after missing last year with an ACL injury. Leelou Novotny and Liz Birkeland finished 17th and 22nd overall to round out our top 7.

Our JV girls took home the team title by finishing 1-6 in the race with the individual title going to senior Myriah Tharaldson in a time of 22:03.

In the boy's race, youth was the name of the game for the Jackets. Our top 7 line-up consisted of 2 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 2 freshmen as Micah Thompson who was 2nd in our time trial the week before was winning a MN State Fair Champion Showman with his rabbits. He will rejoin the team next week at St. Olaf. A great opportunity for the youth to step up and they did finishing 3rd overall behind Fargo North and Bemidji. Bjorn Anderson led the way the same way he ended track confidently racing to a 3rd place finish and a new personal best of 16:48 beating #6 ranked A runner Charlie Larson of Pelican Rapids. Our next 2 were frosh Dylan Guck and junior Caden Doll finishing 22nd and 23rd overall. Caden fought off a side stitch for a mile and finished strong in the last 400 meters of the race. Rounding out our top 7 was a nice pack led by Junior Brayden Glorvigen, Blake Swenson, Carter Flatau, and Henry Mathiason finishing 30, 32, 33, and 34 respectively. A lot of our runners had a tougher time with the heat and humidity over the last half of the race, but we put in a big week of training. Moving forward we will need to stay consistent and trust the miles we have put in this summer.

Our JV boys finished 2nd overall with Brodey Evenson winning the JV title for the Jackets!
