Fergus Falls won their girls’ soccer home opener on Saturday afternoon with a 7-1 trouncing of Melrose at the Otter Stadium Field.  Fergus Falls scored three goals in each half with Tyra Skjeret scoring three times and assisting on two other goals.

“The girls played much better today,” reported Fergus Falls Head Coach Ben Jurgens.  “Tyra plays that middle position and most of the game goes through her.  She has great options in Yana Prischmann, Madi Budke, and Ella Starzl to dish the ball to, and Vanessa Vaughn is leading our defense and is doing a great job getting used to the position.  “As we will mention all year, each game we play we will have new players playing various positions.  Today the girls looked more comfortable being back on the turf.”

Skjeret’s corner kick goal put the Otters on top at 38:31 of the first half.  Budke converted a pass from Prischmann on the far post at 31:47 to make it 2-0, and a breakaway goal by Olivia Jurgens was setup by a pass from Skjeret at 19:17, giving the Otters a 3-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Skjeret ripped a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box that made it 4-0 at 29:26 of the second half.  At 23:42 Skjeret scored on a free kick, just under the crossbar, from the 26-yard line.  After Melrose scored at 21:01, Starzl tallied an unassisted goal at 15:01 and then scored from Skjeret at 5:01 to complete the scoring.

The Otter JV team lost by the score of 2-0.

“If any athletes are looking for a great sport to join, you are still welcome to join our soccer team,” noted Coach Jurgens.  “Between JV and Varsity there will be plenty of playing time.”

The Otters (2-0) will host Alexandria at 7:00pm Monday at the Otter Stadium Field.
